Grownups Get to Play at Harvest@Night

Gilroy Gardens Family Theme Park is a wonderland for families with young kids—but it’s also amazing at night, after the little ones have gone to bed! To tap into a more adult crowd, the park is hosting the all-new Harvest@Night Beer, Wine and Food Fest on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings (6-10 pm) from November 3 through 26.

As the sun goes down, the entire park will light up with a warm autumn glow. Guests are encouraged to stroll through the park to marvel at the majesty of Sycamore Bridge, the serenity of Claudia’s Garden, the lush beauty of Monarch Garden, and the romance along the Lakeside Trail. At the Marketplace, guests can gather to sample craft beers, fine wines, and gourmet food and enjoy fun games and crafts for all ages.

In nearby San Juan Plaza, live bands will be performing each night. Popular local duo The Pfeffers will kick off opening weekend (November 3-5), followed by Aubrey and Luke (November 10-12). Modern country band 8 Second Ride takes the stage November 17-19. (Another band is TBA for the weekend of November 24-26). Between sets, guests can take a thrilling ride on the Quicksilver Express Mine Coaster or enjoy the views from atop the Panoramic Wheel.

What’s Going On at Gilroy Gardens After Dark?

Gilroy Gardens Family Theme Park is still open on weekends during the day, with all the fun rides and attractions that kids (and grownups) know and love—including the “Spooky Zoo” petting zoo full of creepy crawly critters. But now, for the first time ever, the park is also open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings for Halloween@Night—an extraordinary experience that’s packed with plenty of tricks and treats for all ages!

Get Your Passport for a Weekend of Wine Tasting Adventure

Santa Clara Valley Wineries Fall Passport Weekend (October 13-15) keeps getting bigger and better every year! There are now more than 25 participating wineries along the Wine Trail in Gilroy, San Martin, and Morgan Hill. Purchase your passport in advance, get your souvenir wine glass, and then enjoy tastings, live music, winery tours, new releases, special discounts and more all weekend long!

As a Passport holder, you have the opportunity to meet the talented winemakers and staff of the Santa Clara Valley’s wineries and learn how they produce some of the world’s finest wines. You can expect up to four one-ounce pours at each winery you visit during the weekend. Participating wineries may provide food and entertainment, special select or library wine tastings, barrel samples, and/or special discounts on Passport Weekend.

During your journey, take your souvenir glass to each winery to taste. The winery will use a unique stamp on their designated page in your Passport to commemorate your valued participation, much like an entry visa. Make notes of the wines and wineries you most enjoyed, and return in the future when you may have more time to enjoy yourself and learn even more.

Passports can be purchased in advance at the Gilroy Welcome Center, Fortino Winery, Guglielmo Winery, or online at www.santaclarawines.com. Passports include access to all participating wineries along the wine trail for the duration of the event, and a Passport Booklet to be stamped at each winery.

Tastings on Friday, October 13 will be held from 6-8pm at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center. Participating wineries will be open on Saturday and Sunday, October 14-15, from 12-5 pm.

Costume Up for the Halloween Beer Crawl

Dress to impress! Costumes are encouraged (though certainly not required) for the fourth annual Halloween Beer Crawl in Downtown Gilroy on Saturday, October 21. This annual event features craft breweries located in Downtown Gilroy pour stations—plus tasty bites, home brew beer, live music, Halloween costumes and more!

Presale tickets for the Beer Crawl are just $30 if purchased by October 14; after that, the price is $35. The Beer Crawl itself runs from 2-6 pm, but plan to stick around for the Beer Crawl After Party! This year's event is being held at The District Theater, featuring live music by the Chicano All-Stars. Tickets for the After Party are just $10.

September 2017

In September we’re celebrating California Wine Month…and more!

Shop and Play this Labor Day!

It’s not too late to pack in some family fun this Labor Day weekend! First, book a budget-friendly hotel room so you have a “home base” to relax and just hang out.

Then head out to Gilroy Gardens Family Theme Park to enjoy all the fun rides, cool off at the refreshing Water Oasis, stroll through the gorgeous gardens…and pig out at the All-You-Can-Eat Labor Day BBQ! The menu includes BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwiches and Wild Mushroom Ravioli in Pesto Sauce, plus coleslaw, salad, ice cream novelties, and fountain drinks (beer and wine are available for an extra charge). The Labor Day BBQ is Saturday, Sunday and Monday, September 2-4, from 12 to 2 pm. Price is not included in park admission, but 2017 Premium Cardholders can save 20%. And kids under 2 eat for free!

You definitely don’t want to miss the Labor Day Weekend Sidewalk Sale at Gilroy Premium Outlets, with extra-special savings on top of the everyday 25-65% discounts on all your favorite brands! Be sure to stop by and see us at the Gilroy Welcome Center while you’re here (we’re close to Steve Madden and Forever 21) to get yourself some unique Gilroy souvenirs—plus helpful maps and savings coupons too!

With the extra-long weekend, you’ll still have plenty of time to head for the hills for an invigorating hike at nearby Mt. Madonna or Harvey Bear-Coyote Lake Park. Or maybe you’d prefer to explore the charming wineries and tasting rooms along the Santa Clara Valley Wine Trail. Either way, at the end of the day, treat yourself to dinner in downtown Gilroy. You can be sure that garlic is always on the menu here!

Raise a Glass to Celebrate the Wine Harvest

In honor of the fall harvest, September is California Wine Month—and an outstanding time to visit the 25+ wineries and tasting rooms along the Santa Clara Valley Wine Trail. This area (ranging from Saratoga in the north, through Gilroy and all the way out to Hollister) region is actually one of California’s oldest wine-growing regions and was designated a distinct American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 1989.

Several of our local wineries are hosting special festivities in September to celebrate the harvest season. Plan a tasting trip for the Harvest Festival at Kirigin Cellars (September 10) or the Annual Harvest Celebration Dinner at Hecker Pass Winery (September 23)—or both! Other popular winery events going on this month include Groovin in the Grove concerts on Sunday afternoons at Clos La Chance, Cab & Kabobs at Solis Winery, and private luxury wine tasting experiences at Martin Ranch. And be sure to come back for Fall Passport Weekend, October 13-15, so you can sample them all!

Whenever you decide to take your wine tasting tour, be sure to stop by the Gilroy Welcome Center first. You can pick up our beautiful new stemless wine glasses—as well as a Wine Trail Map and valuable coupons for free and discounted wine tasting. Cheers!

Play On! Treat Yourself to a Theatrical Double Feature

Gilroy is truly fortunate to have not just one but two high-caliber community theater groups. And in the month of September, both Pintello Comedy Theater and Limelight Actors Theater have new shows opening. We highly recommend booking a hotel room on a Friday or Saturday night so you can enjoy both shows on the same weekend!

There’s always something funny going on at Pintello Comedy Theater, and they’ll be bringing the timeless humor of “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” to the Gilroy Grange Hall on Friday and Saturday nights, September 1-23 (plus one Sunday matinee on September 10). This is one show you don’t want to miss!

Meanwhile, over at the Gilroy Center for the Arts in downtown Gilroy, Limelight Actors Theater will be presenting “The Outgoing Tide,” a drama that hums with dark humor and powerful emotion. This show also runs on Friday and Saturday evenings, September 1-23, with a matinee on Sunday, September 27. You are welcome to bring your own dinner and wine, or you can order from The Milias Restaurant and have dinner delivered right to your table. Enjoy the show(s)!

Fantasy, Feasts and Family Fun at the Faire

Find your fantasy at the Northern California Renaissance Faire, which returneth to Casa de Fruta on weekends, September 16 through October 15. You’ll enjoy live entertainment, fine food and drink, arts and crafts, jousting tournaments, and games for all ages. There’s also a free Celtic Rock Concert Series every Saturday evening. Come in costume or rent one for the day. It’s great fun for the whole family—and kids 12 and under get in free!

Theme weekends are as follows:

  • Sept 16 & 17: Opening Weekend
  • Sept 23 & 24: Pirate Invasion
  • Sept 30 & Oct 1: Heroes & Warriors
  • October 7 & 8: Oktoberfest
  • October 14 & 15: Fantasy Forever

April 2017

Give yourself a “Spring Break” this April and plan a fun family getaway to Gilroy!

What in the world is going on at Gilroy Gardens?

The long winter wait is finally over! Gilroy Gardens Family Theme Park’s official Opening Day is Sunday, April 2. Come discover over 40 rides and attractions that provide old-fashioned fun for all ages! Gilroy Gardens will be open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through May and will open daily for the summer season starting June 2. This year the park will be hosting Guinness World Records Live, where visitors will have the chance to set official world records!

Looking for an adventure in taste?

For more grownup fun, several local wineries are offering special events and classes throughout the month of April. On both April 1 and April 30, Clos La Chance is hosting evening “Paint and Sip” art classes with an instructor who will guide you step-by-step as you create a wine-inspired painting. (Of course, there will also be wine served to provide the inspiration!) Solis Winery has a similar “Swirl, Sip, Paint!” event planned for the afternoon of April 27. Guests are invited to spend a spring afternoon sipping wine with friends while learning new painting techniques on the back patio overlooking the vineyard and mountains.

Other upcoming wine events include an Introduction to Wine Tasting class led by Sommelier Cristian Gutzeit at Bella Viva Ristorante and Wine Bar in downtown Gilroy (April 8), a Zinfandel Pairing event at Fortino Winery (April 8), and an After Dark Dance Party at Clos La Chance (April 15).

Walk it. Bike it. Run it. Hike it.

Whatever way you do it, do it here in Gilroy! Bring your mountain bike to Coyote Lake Park on April 9 for “Better Biking in the Shade,” a ranger-led ride along the scenic Calaveras Trail. Then lace up your running shoes for the R5K Fun Run on April 22 at Christmas Hill Park. This fun Earth Day event can be a run, trot, or walk—and everyone who finishes gets a medal and a t-shirt! For a true backcountry experience, explore Henry W. Coe State Park’s lesser-known east side during Backcountry Weekend (April 28-30), the one weekend each year where vehicles can access the park through the Bell’s Station gate on Highway 152 east of Gilroy.

March 2017

This month in Gilroy we’re celebrating the start of spring—and our wonderful wineries!

Wander through Wildflowers

With all the rain we’ve had this winter, it should be a spectacular spring for wildflowers. So once the sun comes out, lace up those hiking boots and take a hike! Some our favorite local treks include the Mummy Mountain Trail at Coyote Lake, Sprig Lake Loop at Mt. Madonna, and the Springs/Forest Trail loop at Coe Park.

If you’ve got time, drive down to Pinnacles National Park (just an hour’s drive from Gilroy), where the Juniper Canyon trail winds through grassy meadows bursting with a wide variety of stunning wildflowers for the first mile or so. After that, you’ll face some steep switchbacks going up into the High Peaks—an exhilarating journey if you’re up for it.

Get your Passport for Tasting Adventure

If you’re looking for a more relaxing kind of trail, you’re in luck! March 17-19 will be Spring Passport Weekend at participating wineries along the Santa Clara Valley Wine Trail. Like a fine wine, this popular event gets better and better each year.

Reserve your passports in advance by ordering online at www.santaclarawines.com and specifying the winery where you’d like to pick up your passport booklet and souvenir wine glass. Online passports cost $40. If you prefer, you can also buy your passports in person for $45 at any participating winery. Better yet, come by to pick up your passports at the Gilroy Welcome Center, which is offering a special promotion: if you buy 6 passports, you get a free Gilroy wine tote (while supplies last)! Be sure to also pick up a Wineries Map so you can plan your tasting tour.

As a passport holder, you get to visit any of the participating wineries along the Santa Clara Valley Wine Trail. You can expect up to four one-ounce pours at each winery you visit on Saturday or Sunday (March 18 and 19) from 12-5 pm. A few selected wineries will also be pouring at a special event on Friday evening (March 17) from 6-8 pm at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center. Your Passport entitles you to attend all three days of fun!

During your journey, you’ll bring your souvenir glass to each winery to receive your wine tasting and get your passport stamped at each tasting room you visit. You’ll get to meet the talented winemakers and staff at over 25 family-owned wineries and learn how they produce some of the world’s finest wines.

Many participating wineries have food and live entertainment, pour special select or library wines, provide barrel samples, and offer special Passport Weekend discounts on wine purchases. Some wineries also offer non-alcoholic drinks and other treats for designated drivers, and several local restaurants and other businesses also offer special discounts to Passport holders.

Hope to see you out on the Trail!

January 2017

January is California Restaurant Month – and your last chance to enjoy the wonder of Lumination at Gilroy Gardens!

Celebrate California Restaurant Month in Gilroy

Did you know that January is California Restaurant Month? This gives you a great excuse to visit the many wonderful restaurants we have right here in Gilroy—and maybe try someplace new!

Check out our Restaurants directory for a complete list of local favorites, including Family, Fine Dining, Asian, Italian, Mexican, and Specialty. Or stop by the Gilroy Welcome Center (we’re in Building A of Gilroy Premium Outlets, near Forever 21) to pick up our handy Restaurant Map and browse through sample menus.

Don’t Miss the Wonder of Lumination

If you haven’t yet gotten out to see the incredible light displays of Lumination at Gilroy Gardens, you’d better hurry! This unique night-time festival celebrating Chinese history and culture (which recently won the prestigious Brass Ring Live Entertainment Excellence Award) ends on January 8. The colorful lighted sculptures built from silk and steel by master lantern builders from Zigong, China are like nothing you’ve ever seen before!

There are 30 different colossal displays spread throughout the park’s 26 acres. As you enter, you walk beneath dragons atop the Lumination Welcome Gate and past the colossal Nine-Heaven Pagoda. Guarding the entrance to Water Oasis is the Porcelain Dragon, an incredible structure that stretches over 170 feet long and is made up of more than 60,000 Chinese porcelain plates, cups and bowls, all painstakingly hand-tied together. Monarch Greenhouse is transformed into a Panda Sanctuary, with dozens of the adorable black-and-white bears playing in a bamboo forest.

Be sure to get up close to the Bejeweled Qilin, mythical beasts with the head of a lion, the eye of a tiger, the antlers of a deer, the body of an ox, and the scales of a dragon (don’t worry—they don’t bite!). These incredible light displays were constructed using thousands of tiny glass bottles filled with colored water to create a dazzling jewel-like effect at night. And two of Lumination’s most remarkable displays were actually constructed right in the middle of Coyote Lake: the towering Temple of Heaven and the spectacular Carp Jumping over the Dragon Gate, which brings an ancient Chinese legend to breathtaking life.

When you visit, be sure to catch the “Lumination Live” show in the amphitheater, featuring talented jugglers, acrobats, and face-changing artists from China. You’ll also find unique hand-crafted gifts (and can even watch the artists at work) in the Artisan Marketplace and authentic Chinese food from The Wok and various food stalls.

Where Winter Fun Grows on Trees!

For the first time ever, Gilroy Gardens Family Theme Park is also open during the daytime over the holiday break. So if the kids are getting tired of being cooped up inside, bring them out to enjoy their favorite rides and attractions—and the outdoor ice rink! Both the park and Lumination are open daily through January 8. Separate day and night tickets are required, but admission is free with 2017 park memberships.

December 2016

December is always a special month here in Gilroy, and this year there will more holiday fun than ever—by day and by night!

Make Magical Holiday Memories

Winter will be full of wonder at Gilroy Gardens. During the day, the park will remain open for an extended season: Weekends through December 18 and then daily from December 19 through January 8 (except for December 24 and 25) while kids are on their winter break from school. This is a great chance to get out of the house, enjoy the rides, and explore the gorgeous gardens. You can even go ice skating on the new outdoor ice rink! To really get in the holiday spirit, be sure to visit Santa’s Workshop and indulge in the delicious traditional holiday feast with turkey and all the trimmings.

Lumination Lights Up the Holiday Season

At night, the incredible Lumination has also been extended by popular demand through the holiday season. Don’t miss this final chance to experience the Brass Ring-nominated event, which ends on January 8. The spectacular light displays, live shows, and bustling artisan marketplace are all brought to life by talented artists and performers from Zigong, China who have been living and working in Gilroy since June. It’s a truly unique cross-cultural way to enjoy the holiday season, and a perfect way to spend time with friends or family who are visiting from out of town.

Santa Sighting in Downtown Gilroy

For even more family fun, Santa Claus himself will be on hand to lead the Downtown Gilroy Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting on Saturday, December 3. This annual tradition keeps getting better every year! In addition to the parade, there will also be a doggie dress-up contest, many vendors supporting local non-profit groups, and performances by the Gilroy High School choir and Studio Three dancers.

Something for Everyone on your List

Of course, you probably have a lot of shopping to do this holiday season, but don’t worry—Gilroy’s got you covered there. Take advantage of everyday savings of 25-65% and extended holiday shopping hours at the 145+ brand stores of Gilroy Premium Outlets. Be sure to explore the charming antique stores and other locally-owned shops along Monterey Road in Downtown Gilroy. You can also find unique hand-made gifts at the Artisans’ Holiday Boutique at the Gilroy Center for the Arts (December 2-4) or the Fortino Winery Holiday Boutique (December 10-11).

No Overdue Fines at this Library

The holidays can get stressful, so make sure you set aside some time to unwind and relax. Solis Winery can help with that. They’re offering special Holiday Library Tastings each weekend in December—a rare opportunity to taste and purchase some of the wonderful super-premium wines from their library.

Celebrate the New Year with a Bang!

For the first time ever, Gilroy Gardens and Lumination will be open on New Year’s Eve, with an exciting fireworks show planned at midnight to celebrate the start of 2017. Hope to see you all there!

While the kids splash and play, moms (and dads!) can sit back in under the palm trees and relax with tropical drinks. That afternoon, the park also hosts a special Mother’s Day Champagne and Dessert Reception in the Events Plaza (separate tickets are required).

If your mother loves music, take her to the South Valley Symphony concert on May 8 at Mission San Juan Bautista—it’s a beautiful venue to hear amazing music by Canadian, Argentinian, Mexican, and American composers.
